Dr Emma Katz, the world’s leading academic expert on how coercive control harms children and mother-child relationships, and how these harms can be overcome.

Dr Katz is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology whose work has influenced legislation and professional practice in the UK and globally.

Her book Coercive Control in Children’s and Mothers’ Lives is influential and acclaimed, as is her expert academic blog Decoding Coercive Control with Dr Emma Katz which is read by thousands of subscribers around the world.

Learning Objectives:

• To gain an understanding of how the coercive control of perpetrators in families and after separation harms children & young people.
• To be confident in recognising the protective parenting efforts and strengths of victim-survivor parents.
• To be aware of how professionals can effectively write about a perpetrator’s coercive control and its harms.
• To be aware of how professionals can work with children and young people who are victims of coercive control in empowering ways.

• To gain an understanding of how destitute victims of domestic abuse who have no recourse to public funds access statutory support. The groups this session will focus on are those eligible for the Migrant Victims Domestic Abuse Concession, asylum seekers or pre-asylum applicants and individuals on student or skilled work visas.
• To gain an understanding of the different immigration routes and the key features to look for to identify a person’s immigration status.

• To raise awareness among front line staff and practitioners on how abusers can misuse technology.
• To offer actionable advice and guidance to help victims improve their cyber security.  

It will cover a wide range of technology that can be misused by perpetrators, although it is not an exhaustive list.
